This Japanese import featuring five teenagers with superhero powers may turn out to be for older girls what Pokémon is for the pee-wee set. The fantasy-action story lines of Sailor Moon (named for the leader) is typical anime fare--which means it's far more creative than anything you'll see on Saturday morning. And far more complex--the stories are intricate and flashback sequences feature wordless narrative. Then again, what high-spirited girl wouldn't love the magical makeup that transforms hip schoolgirls into butt-kicking heroines? In this one-hour feature, we meet a new foe, a mysterious childhood friend of Sailor Moon's boyfriend who returns--from deep space! His evil plan to rid the Earth of life includes flowers with awesome powers, vine-covered foes, and telekinetics. Quite the challenge for Sailors Moon, Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, and Jupiter. Despite the action, the series certainly has a different feel and color scheme than most male-driven anime. The Japanese have two terms: shonen (for boys) and shojo (for girls), and if girls haven't had a chance to see the shojo anime, this is the starting point. This subtitled version is uncut from the original Japanese cartoon, and the reading crowd above 7 is the appropriate audience for the video's occasional spooky imagery. This unedited version was soaked up by kids in Japan, but the cultural differences might be questionable for American parents. There's a brief, nondescriptive conversation about homosexuality and ghostly naked figures (think Barbie doll) that are illustrated, although it's not nudity as much as the female form. The dubbed version has minor edits in action and dialogue, targeting a slightly younger crowd. --Doug Thomas |

Pretty Much Flawless |
I've loved Sailor Moon since I was a little girl, and as I grew older I realized how intricate and beautiful this series really is. There are 3 movies that came out to theaters in Japan - this one, Sailor Moon S, and Sailor Moon Super S. This one by far is my favorite. Sailor Moon and her friends meet a strange young man who seems infatuated with Mamoru (Tuxedo Mask)named Fiore (Sp). It is revealed that he is possessed by an evil flower who is trying to turn earth into her nesting ground. Although it has nothing to do with the "R" series, it is beautifully drawn and written. It was this movie that made me understand why I love Sailor Moon as much as I do. FYI: Try to get the uncut, Japanese version, if you can. It's a lot better than the English version.

I absolutely LOVE Sailor Moon and so do my children. We all watch the first four seasons over and over again. I watched the fifth season by myself because it has lots of language , nudity, and other stuff not for kids. It's like there are two different types of Sailor Moon the ones for kids like the first four seasons and the dream hole movie and the adult ones like the fifth season Sailor Moon Stars, The rose movie, the ice queen movie, and Sailor and the 7 ballz part one and two (which i do not recommend the ballz one since there is kinky sex, lesbianism, and other raunchy stuff) The reason this movie is not for kids is because the little rose creature is a nude woman and Fiore one of Darien,s friends is in love with him. That means that it is introducing homosexuality. I do not recommend this to anyone under thirteen. |

An English version true to the original Japanise Version |

When DiC aquired the US and Canadian rights in 1994 and started airing them the following year, they didn't get the kind of numbers in ratings that shows like Power Rangers where getting. If the show was as sucessful as DiC had entended, this movie would could have seen a theatrical run in the US. This Geneon Signature Series DVD doesn't have DiC english version, but instead it has the original cut of the film fully translated except for one thing. In the climax of the film, you don't hear power of love instead you hear the untranslated Moon Revenge, you hear the song again when the credits role. When you see that opening logo with the beach and the japanise marks, you would think your about to watch a Godzilla movie. This movie is good for the average anime fan even if they don't care about Sailor Moon, it also apeals to fans who grew up watching the show. The english translation doesn't delute the plot but some things have been changed for localization, because in one episode of the show when it's Serina's(Sailor Moon) Birthday, she mentions Christmas. I give the uncut version of Sailor Moon R: Promise of the Rose a perfect 5 out of 5 but for the DVD itself I would have loved a few more DVD extras. |

I Bought this along with the other two movies several years ago and i love it. i cried during the battle scene. i got picked on for admitting to that by someone who didn't support my being a fan of Anime.
believe me if i could afford the dvd of this movie i would buy it because i love the romance between Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask.
